We were awed and humbled by Eugene Morgan's personal accounting of the worst Naval disaster in U.S. history. Eugene is one of the last survivors of the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis in WWII. Eugene told us, "The Indianapolis is forever etched in military history, delivering the first atomic bomb for U.S. forces in the South Pacific before meeting a perilous fate when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea on July 30, 1945."

It was a very special night of brotherhood and history. We began with a sumptuous lasagna dinner prepared by our own Junior Warden, Gary "Cookie" Photakis! We were joined by Prince Hall Hercules Lodge #17 and enjoyed a great night of Brotherhood with them. LTC Bill Holloman then rendered a riveting presentation about his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman in WWII. The Tuskegee Airmen were an extraordinary part of American history, and LTC Holloman's presentation regarding them was both sobering and inspirational.

May 5 (Monday)
Eureka Lodge Stated Meeting
Regular monthly meeting at 7:30pm, Green Lake Masonic Center. We opened on the Third Degree.
The May 5th stated meeting was Past Master's Night. It was wonderful to see so many of Eureka's Past Masters in attendance. A distinctive memento was presented to each Past Master. It was very special to have Past Grand Master Most Worshipful Brother Al Jorgenson participating with me in recognizing the Past Masters. The meeting began with another of Junior Warden Gary Photakis' delicious meals. What a chef! He always fills the house!

This was followed by a most uplifting patriotic presentation by 32nd Degree Mason / Lieutenant Colonel Joe Jackson who won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam. LTC Jackson flew as an Air Force Pilot in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His presentation portrayed that fateful Mother's Day in 1968, when, as a C-123 pilot, he distinguished himself during a daring rescue of a USAF Combat Control Team from the enemy-controlled Special Forces Camp at Kham Duc.
Not enough can be said about this true American Hero, but you can read about him here in an
October 2005 article in Airforce Magazine.
Appropriately at this meeting, the National Sojourner's conducted a unique flag ceremony, and were attired in Colonial costumes.
